I Could Never Be Happy As A Christian

When I first got saved and started witnessing for the Lord, I would occasionally hear people say that they would never be able to be happy as a Christian. Another version of this is that they could never live without certain sins in their life. Being a convert about a year old or less I was not sure what to say when people would bring this up. I knew that they could, and everybody could be happy as a Christian but I didn’t really know or understand this situation from a biblical perspective.

Are They Right?

After praying, studying, and reading the scripture I actually learned that they will never, ever be happy as a Christian in their current state that is. That is a biblical truth. Now don’t shut me down just yet. I have some really good news. I learned something extremely important through the scriptures about why this is. In their current state they would never be happy. Let’s discover why that is.

The Carnal Mind

God tells us that as a result of the fall or the first sin of Adam that every man and woman is now born with a sinful nature. In other words, at birth you desire to sin. We are born with a carnal mind.

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Romans 8:6-8

This scripture is saying that our minds are controlled by a sinful fallen nature. This nature does not want God, it does not want to repent, and it does not want to serve God.

1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

2 wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

3 among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Ephesians 2:1-3

Our minds are constantly on sinful things. We fill our thoughts and minds up with sin daily. We feed on it. The reason we feed on it is because we desire it. That desire comes from within us. We seek sin out to consume it. After conversion however, something happens to us. There is a change. When that change happens, God requires us to renew our minds. The mind is extremely important. If you feed on God’s word it will change your mind.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Romans 12:2

Sinful Flesh

The Bible tells us that our sinful nature will fight against God, his word, and his Spirit. Even after salvation our flesh will try to grow in strength and if possible, cause us to sin again. We must crucify the flesh and its sinful deeds through prayer and the Word of God.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21

A Sinful Heart of Stone

seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:

Numbers 15:39

The Bible tells us that our own heart will cause us to sin. Don’t listen to your heart nor fulfill any of its desires. They are sinful and evil.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Jeremiah 17:9

Our Default State

Our default state is a carnal mind, a wicked heart & sinful flesh. God says that those who obey these sinful desires will not go to heaven. If we simply live according to our own heart, ideas of right and wrong and our own desires then God calls us sinful and wicked. They are part of our sin nature. Because of the fall by default, we want to sin.

choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

Hebrews 11:25

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Genesis 3:6

Sin is pleasurable for a season. We become bound and addicted to sins. We desire them. On the other hand, our carnal mind, sinful flesh, and hard heart has no desire to have anything to do with God. In a sinful fallen state, we cannot fulfill those sinful desires that we think makes us happy with God. The idea of removing sin from our lives is a horrible thought. That is because we are carnal. There is another side of ourselves which we have never experienced. It needs to be born in us. This side will give us more joy and happiness with God than the sinful things ever gave us through our carnal state.

You Must Be Born Again

3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

John 3:3-6

When a true born-again experience occurs, something is born inside of you. Now you have a real and a genuine love for God and the things of God. Before my conversion I hated Christian music. To be fair I was attending a very dead church with my parents at the time. The church had no life. There was no anointing or presence of God. The Christian hymns were dreadful to me. After my conversion I understood them. I also found a church that sung them under an anointing, and it gave me a love for them.

When someone is born again life is birthed inside of them. Christ now lives in your heart. You finally feel alive. So many Christians say they felt so clean, alive, full of gratefulness and thankfulness when they were saved. A sinner hates God and the things of God but upon conversion a true, genuine love for God is birthed inside of you.

The New Man & Happiness Through Christ

When I hear someone tell me that they tried Christianity, and it wasn’t for them or that they hated going to church when they were younger that just tells me that they have never been born again. The parable of the Sower demonstrates many different types of encounters people can have with the word of God. Only one encounter mentioned brings a true lasting conversion experience.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2 Corinthians 5:17

26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Ezekiel 36:26-27

No one would ever be happy trying to serve God in a fallen sinful state. Something needs to be born inside of us. That life that only Jesus can give must be born in us. The Bible tells us that we can have joy and peace through Christ. The Bible says that there is a change in us and in our heart. This is how anyone and everyone can be happy as a Christian. Without this born-again experience this is how anyone and everyone can be miserable as a Christian as well.
