Is the Bible Outdated?

Have you ever heard anyone say that the Bible is outdated or that it should be rewritten for modern times? You may not have heard these exact same arguments, but you probably have heard a version of them or something similar to them. Let’s explore the relevance of the Bible in our modern world and is it actually outdated? Let’s explore the purpose of the Bible, Its relevance today and it’s importance for the future.

In The Beginning

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Genesis 1:1-3

God is the creator of time, space, and matter. He exists independently outside of those three. With all of our modern-day technology and telescopes we have not even been able to observe all of space. There is the observable then the unobservable space which no man has ever even seen even with a telescope. The vastness of it is beyond our comprehension. Yet God created all of it. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 1:25, that the foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of man. If you were to take the collective wisdom of every human being that ever existed, we would still collectively be more foolish in our greatest wisdom than the most foolish thing God could ever say or do.

If you walk out onto a beach and gaze out at the ocean you cannot even begin to comprehend a fraction of what is happening below the surface with the amount of life living in it. Not only can God imagine but he knows everything that is happening. Nothing goes undetected from God. God is omnipresent. In all of his creation he can be found.

Before God, nothing created is hidden, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.

Hebrews 4:13 (CJB)

7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: If I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

Psalms 139:7-10

We are designed! Every single intricate and minute part of our being was not only thought of, but it was designed and created. It is absolutely fascinating to watch raw materials enter into a factory and then what comes out is a designed finished product. With God however there were no raw materials. He had to create literally everything. Existence started off with God’s word. God said! Then God formed man out of the dust of the earth which itself is a creation of God. Every fabric of our being is known to him. He is not like any other inventor or creator. God is not like man. He knows everything down to levels we cannot even comprehend or imagine. We have not even thought up or imagined the details that God knows

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Revelation 1:8

God is not bound by time but rather he is the creator of it. Man is bound by time, God is not. Within time man will rise and fall. Generations will rise and die off. Generation after generation will pass away yet God remains.

24 For All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:

25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. and this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

1 Peter 1:24-25

God has established the earth from the very beginning with his word. Without God’s word this entire universe would cease to exist. It never would have existed in the first place. God’s word is the source of all life on earth.

The Bible’s relevancy In the World Today

Cultures change, people change, ideas change and morality changes. What people view as right and wrong changes from generation to generation and from culture to culture. You can debate about the similarities but in spite of the similarities there is constant change. People who claim the Bible is outdated use terms such as archaic, old fashioned, ancient, irrelevant, backwards and primitive. The world’s standards of morality, ethics and right and wrong changes. God however tells us that he does not change.

For I am the LORD, I change not;

Malachi 3:6

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Hebrews 13:8

God is consistently exactly the same. The same God of the Old Testament is the God of the New. Testament means covenant. It is a contract. God interacts and deals with us according to the contract. He is 100% the exact same God however there is a new contract. If you read the book of revelation which tells us about the future of our planet, he may appear to be more like he was in the Old Testament. The book of Revelation speaks of different ages that are yet to come.

Man is like to vanity: His days are as a shadow that passeth away.

Psalms 144:4

Our current trends, technology, clothes, ideas, will fade away like every generation before us. We will fade and our ideas will be outdated to those who come after us. Yet God was here before us, he will be here after us and he will remain after the next generation and forever. What each generation deems right and wrong will pass away and become irrelevant or evil to the next generation. God’s word with his morals and standards will still remain after we are all gone, however.

Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.

Psalms 145:13

A Conflict of Morality

We live in an ever-changing world with a never changing God. The world is saying God’s values, morals and standards have not changed with ours. God is not modern and up to date with our ideas of morality. In other words, the world is saying they are wiser than God. God is even corrupt. They have changed and adapted to what is right while God has not.

The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways:

Proverbs 14:14

This is the condition of the world. They have rejected God and his word. They are filled with their own ways and not his. The world believes that morality should be fluid and subjective but true morality, God’s morality demands a concrete never changing standard. Without a concrete standard you will have injustice. Outside of God’s law you will 100% always have injustice. Liberty is based on just laws and just laws must be concrete. They cannot be fluid or subjective or they are unjust. (Read more about what Liberty is here.) If the standards change, then who is just and who is not? Both cannot be just with opposing standards.

9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

10 declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

Isaiah 46:9-10

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Matthew 24:35

The Future

The earth itself obeys God’s commands, Psalms 104:5-9. It exists as a result of his word. Your fashion, ideas, slang, music, style will pass away and become outdated, but the earth will still be dependent upon God’s word. After this generation is gone and its ways are evil spoken of by future generations God’s word will still remain.

Thou, O LORD, remainest for ever; Thy throne from generation to generation.

Lamentations 5:19

In the future there will come a time when God himself will rule the earth in the flesh. Christ will return but as a ruling and conquering King. His morals, standards, values, and ideas which are found in the Bible are coming with him. The entire planet will be living according to his word. The morality of man will have passed like a tree that bore no fruit and was cut down and tossed into the fire to be remembered no more. What you call old fashioned will dominant the entire planet while what you call modern will be evil spoken of.

And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Revelation 19:15

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

Revelation 20:4

After that there will be a new heaven and a new earth. This same God will have countless multitudes that celebrate and love his word living in this new earth. The future of this universe belongs to God and his children. God’s word will always be the dominant word in this world. It is not God that has become irrelevant, but man has made himself and his ways irrelevant by leaving God and disregarding his word.

A Lack of Understanding

Many people will make comments about the Bible being old and outdated because they do not know or understand the Bible. They want to ignore that an all-knowing, all-powerful God that is outside of space, time and creation gave us his covenant through words. Regardless of what technology is or is not mentioned or what advances of man that are not mentioned it is not about what man has done.

It is not about man’s ever-changing ideas, opinions and shifting morality. It is man that needs to update not God. God does not need to revise or update his word. Man confuse the word of God and don’t understand it. They don’t understand the Old Testament and its purpose. They also get angry when the Bible condemns their lifestyle choices when the Bible calls it a sin. There is nothing new under the sun.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 1:9

Those sins that you call modern are very old and those from generations past have done them as well. They are not a result of evolution but a result of the fallen, sinful state of mankind. Jesus calls us to repent from our sins and to turn to him. We are through prayer and reading of his word crucify our flesh. That means that its strength and desire to sin is weakened and overpowered by God’s spiritual Power that we can receive through him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

1 John 2:16-17
