Socialism is brought up frequently in society today. Many support it and many oppose it. Everyone thinks they know what it is as well. If you ask people about it, you will learn about many different types and variations to the theory and idea of socialism. What is socialism though? Before we can address Socialism and the Bible, we first need to define what socialism is and what socialism is not. In this post we will define socialism. We will compare it with scripture in another post.

In the Garden of Eden Satan takes God’s words, twists them and mixes them with a lie and gives it back to the woman so that God’s word now means something completely different than what God actually said. The woman believed this lie. Satan works the exact same way today.

1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Genesis 3:1-5

Because of this we must thoroughly do our own research of the word of God and never assume anything. Compare the meanings in scripture with the information that is being presented to us. If anything does not line up, then throw it out. Any error from scripture is dangerous. Paul wrote to Timothy and gave him some very important words of wisdom.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15

Defining Socialism

We will not get into the inspirations of socialism. Instead we will go over the theory as it relates to Karl Marx. The idea of socialism started in the 1800’s.  Pierre Leroux, is said to have used the term in the Parisian journal Le Globe in 1832. Below is the current definition of the word.

  1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, capital, land, etc., by the community as a whole, usually through a centralized government.
  2. procedure or practice in accordance with this theory.
  3. (in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles. (2023).

Understanding definitions is extremely important. This definition tells us that socialism is done through a government. There are some that support socialism that will tell you that “the people” own the means of production and distribution, capital, land, etc. In reality it is a government that owns it, not the people. There is the argument that the government works for the people or were elected by the people.

In theory many do start out with a democratic election but then the government overrides the will of the people and a dictatorship begins. They enact a one party government system. Venezuela is an example of this. Socialism gives the government a lot of power. They then abuse this power to oppress the people that voted them in.

What is the means of Production?

The means of production is the social use and ownership of the elements needed to produce goods and services. A good is an object that people use to satisfy their wants. Examples of goods include a cellphone, a book, or a hairbrush. A service is anything that someone does to satisfy another human’s wants, usually for payment. Examples of services are a haircut from a barber, a plate of food from a cook, or calling a plumber to fix a toilet (2023).

What is distribution?

the act of dividing something among people, or spreading or supplying something (2023).

What is Capital?

Capital is a broad term for anything that gives its owner value or advantage, like a factory and its equipment, intellectual property like patents, or a company’s or person’s financial assets. Even though money itself can be called capital, the word is usually used to describe money used to make things or invest., (2023).

What is Land?

Land is property or real estate.

To sum everything up, in socialism the government owns:

  1. Your labor and the product or your labor.
  2. The distribution of that product which is where it can go, whom it can go to and how much of it can go.
  3. Money, property, businesses, banks, patents, assets, entity’s etc.
  4. Real estate and property.

As you see this gives the government a lot of power. These governments use this power to attack their political opponents. They imprison them, give them unfair trials, and attack normal citizens that have any differing or opposing ideas and thoughts contrary to the government. Socialists will tell you that the government only confiscates property and land that belongs to businesses but from history we know they do not stop there. We have countless stories where the normal everyday citizens are in danger of losing their own property.

When determining if something lines up with the Bible we must carefully compare every word, meaning and part to the Bible. We must consider all of scripture. Our bias should not be towards any political system, political party, ideas or thoughts. We must renew our minds with the word of God. Submit all ideas to God and his word. Change your mind about literally everything you believe and submit to God’s word and authority.

Put God First

Money & economics is a serious problem for so many people. They want to twist God’s word to fit their own economic system. Socialism, Capitalism, Communism, Marxism and Fascism didn’t even exist when Jesus walked the dusty roads of Jerusalem 2000 years ago. As a matter of fact, if we are truly Christian we are to submit 100% all of our ideas, thoughts and opinions about government and money to God under his word. We should come to God humbly and like a child be willing to build from scratch all new ideas about government and the economy.

Who is greater at money management and the government, God or Karl Marx? God or Adam Smith? God or Benito Mussolini? God or the founding fathers of the United States? It is God. All of the philosophers, critical thinkers and billionaires the world has ever known could not compete with God’s own wisdom, knowledge and understanding when it comes to anything let alone the economy and government.

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

1 Timothy 6:10

This scripture verse is not usually quoted in its entirety. It includes the word “coveted”. Many will use this verse to say those with money are greedy and covet but the Bible uses the word covet differently in this verse in Exodus.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

Exodus 20:17

Democratic Socialism

Democratic Socialism

socialism, or a modified form of socialism, achieved by a gradual transition by and under democratic political processes. (2023)

This is where the majority which could be as low as 51% of the popular vote approves of socialism as their new form of government. This could also be a modified version of socialism.

Modern democratic socialists vary widely in their views of how a proper socialist economy should function, (2023)

It is important to note that this is how socialism started in Venezuela, with a democratic vote. The far left United Socialist Party of Venezuela has been the ruling party of Venezuela since 2010. By definition you could argue that this is how Venezuela started although now they are just flown blown socialists. It is difficult to define the modified versions however since there are so many and varied ideas and opinions on it.

Alexandria OcasioCortez & Bernie Sanders

Ocasio-Cortez has likened her view of democratic socialism to Scandinavian social democracy. (2023)

She is talking about Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden. Sweden of course is not socialist though. Sweden does not own the means of production. Decades ago Sweden’s economy was struggling and this was a result of socialistic policies they had at the time. It is true that Sweden has some social programs that are bigger than what the U.S. has but at the same time they also have markets that are freer than what the U.S. has. Are they by definition socialism though? No they are not.

If you have not seen the quote from Denmark here it is.

I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism, therefore, I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy.

Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen

The rest of the Nordic countries are not socialist either. When self-professed democratic socialists point to these countries they are pointing to country’s that implement the free market. While some socialists will profess that It’s the people that is actually in charge there must be an enforcer. The theory that the people are in charge cannot be done. It is always through a government. This government is given a lot of power. You are entrusting fallible human beings to a lot of power. When the people that want this power are against your freedom of speech and religion from the very beginning it is only going to get worse if they actually get that power.

Karl Marx

Socialism is the first step towards a Marxist society. The second stage is Communism. Communism is economic. In order to enforce communism, you would need Marxism. If your thoughts go to death camps, gulags, labor camps, dead farmers etc… you would be correct. When this “theory” is played out in real life and enforced this is what happens. This is the first step towards a Dictatorship.
