What Is The Meaning Of Life?

Many have sought out and tried to find meaning for their existence and their life. They have tried to fill their life with purpose and with whatever they feel would give them a good life while they are here. Have you ever wondered, what does God have to say about why you exist, and why you are alive?

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

Genesis 1:26-30

Why Am I Here?

You might say,

“God made man but what about me specifically? What is the purpose of my life? Why do I exist at all?”

Humans are God’s representatives on the earth. Man was made in the image of God. This is more than being in the physical shape of God. The angels were not made in God’s image. They do not look like us. When the animals see us, when the angels see us, when the demons see us they see the image of God. We are representing God’s authority and will on the earth. God’s word is supposed to abide in us and come forth from our mouths. God’s will, is supposed to come out through our lives on this earth. That was God’s plan. However, because of sin mankind has fallen from God’s plan.

And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

Genesis 2:8

And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

Genesis 2:15

God set man in charge over the fish, birds, cattle, the entire earth, and everything that is alive in it. God told the man and the woman to have children. God gives man a job and a responsibility, but this is not man’s reason or purpose for existing or being alive.

God Wants A Relationship With Us

And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

Genesis 3:8

They knew God’s voice. This means they had heard it before and were familiar with it. This verse tells us that God sought Adam & Eve out. In the Evening time after Adams work had been finished God came to him and was calling for him, but why?

Has God ever called out to you? How did you respond? Did you hide like Adam and Eve?

And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.

Leviticus 26:12

God wants to be more than a distant being that some think lives in the sky. God the father wants to be more than a friend, he wants to be our family. He wants to be our father. God desires a close relationship with each one of us. We have a lot of ideas and beliefs about God. We have a lot of bias and prejudice based off of what we have heard or think. In spite of what our thoughts are about God, he is the creator of all. He is all knowing and all powerful and yet he wants a close relationship with you.

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God:

1 John 3:1

We can be a part of God’s family. We can become one of his children. The Bible refers to this as a spiritual adoption. If you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of the Living God, repent of your sins and turn to him you will enjoy a life as God’s child.

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

17 and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Romans 8:14-17

God Knows You Better Than You Know Yourself

2 You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off.

3 You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways.

4 For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.

Psalm 139:2-4 NKJV

God has designed and created each and every one of us. God was able to start with absolutely nothing then build and create from that. A man can spend 8-10 years earning a degree is psychology, then spend the rest of his life in that field of work and yet never even come close to knowing everything there is to know. God on the other hand designed your soul and knows every part of your heart, mind and entire being. He searches the hearts and can see every part of us all the way down to a level only God can know, see and understand.

13 For you fashioned my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14 I thank you because I am awesomely made, wonderfully; your works are wonders — I know this very well.

15 My bones were not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.

16 Your eyes could see me as an embryo, but in your book all my days were already written; my days had been shaped before any of them existed.

Psalm 139:13-16 CJB

God Designed & Created You

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Jeremiah 1:5

This scripture is not just talking about Jeremiah only. God does not wait until we are conceived and then start thinking about who we are going to be. God has numbered our days before we were ever conceived. Most are not called to be a prophet but everyone is designed and no one is by accident. Parents make mistakes.

There are accidental pregnancies. Your mother did not make you neither did your father. Your father planted a seed (semen). Your mother supplied the fertile ground needed for growth and nourishment (The Womb). However just like the seed of a fig it is God that gives the life and that creates. No one is an accident to God. He created you on purpose.

I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done,

Isaiah 46:9-10

God knows everything in advance before it happens. There is no life that is not planned and purposely created by God. Some will say, “I was an accident. My parents never wanted to have me.” God does not accidently create life. Even if your parents never meant to get pregnant, God purposely created you.

I Would Never Be Happy As A Christian

Some may say, “I could never be happy as a Christian. It is not for me.”

But what does God have to say about this?

2 wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

3 among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Ephesians 2:2-3

Our body has a sin nature. We are born with a carnal fallen way of thinking. We take pleasure in sin. We desire to sin. We enjoy sin. That is what Paul is saying to the church at Ephesus.

  • Our flesh lusts after sin.
  • Our flesh has its own desires
  • Our mind has its own desires

but every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed

James 1:14

Everyone has their own sinful desires and appetites

The soul of the wicked desireth evil: His neighbour findeth no favour in his eyes.

Proverbs 21:10

Sinners desire evil things

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof

Romans 6:12

Not only do people crave and desire sin but that sin will entrap them, overpower them and keep them in bondage to it. When someone says they could never be happy as a Christian they are telling the truth. No human on the planet could ever be happy as a Christian. Why? The carnal sinful heart, flesh and mind hate God, they hate his word and they hate the things of the spirit. They are carnal and only want and desire things that are carnal.

The old man would never be happy as a Christian. That is why you must be born again. That sinful nature hates the things of God however the spiritual man can and absolutely will be happy with God. Most people know very little of this side. Some acknowledge it and get involved in witch craft but that cannot ever satisfy. The Bible talks about a new man, you become a new creature.

When you are born again you get new desires, a new heart, a new mind. The flesh is crucified. New desires are awaked inside of you that wants to please God. When someone says, “I would never be happy as a Christian”, that is the old carnal man talking. Of course that is never going to be happy. They do not yet understand that there is a part of them that needs to be awakened. It needs to be birthed. Once it is they will realize that they can and absolutely will be satisfied as a Christian.

A New Creature Has New Desires & A New Mind

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2 Corinthians 5:17

26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Ezekiel 36:26-27

God is telling us that as a result of salvation he will give us new desires and new passions. He will give us a desire for him and a love for him. He will give us the strength to keep his word through his spirit.

1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, So panteth my soul after thee, O God.

2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God:

Psalm 42:1-2

David was known as the man after Gods own heart. Salvation awakens a desire for you to connect with God in a close and intimate connection. This connection is deeper than anything you could ever have with another human being.

O taste and see that the LORD is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

Psalm 34:8

David is telling us that God satisfies.

but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

John 4:14

Jesus is telling us that he satisfies. The spiritual desires we have and the thirst we have for God is met through him.

The Inner Struggle

16. This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

17. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would

24. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Galatians 5:16 -17 & 24

We are all spirit beings. Our flesh has desires but so does our spirit. If you have never been born again then your spirit is dormant. Its desires are weak. Your flesh and carnal mind is strong and their desires are what dominates you. There are sinners that do crave the spiritual but they are blind and therefore nothing they do, nor witchcraft, nor false religions or false gods will satisfy that spiritual hunger.

When a person becomes born again, their spirit is awakened. Those desires are awakened because they have finally tasted God. Now they realize they have all new desires that they have never had and now they desire to seek God.

As a sinner you will have desires that will never get satisfied because you’re a spirit being. As a Christian you will also have desires that will never be satisfied because you have a body that craves sin. The desires of the flesh can be weakened. You can gain full power over them. The difference however is that the sins of the flesh will never satisfy. God does satisfy.

Jesus Wants A Relationship With You

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

Matthew 23:37

This verse although somber, speaks volumes about the character and intentions that God has towards us. We see that God through his love and his mercy wants to protect us and take care of us. Even as we disobey his word, he still desires to protect us and wants us to repent and come to him so that he can.

1 Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.

3 Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.

4 Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples.

5 Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you

Isaiah 55:1-5 ESV

God is telling us that he specifically created us with certain spiritual desires, hungers & needs that only he can fulfill. When God designed us he put in us a desire that could only be satisfied and filled by him. He wanted us to have a permanent, never ending, connected relationship with him.

You Were Created To Be With God

This is why you exist. This is your purpose in life.

Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Revelation 4:11

for by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Colossians 1:16

We were created for God.

Our relationship with God is unique. The Bible refers to God the father, as the father of the believer as well but, it also refers to God as more than that.

Our relationship with Jesus is compared to that of a marriage. Jesus also tells us that himself has protective desires towards us. He wants to keep us safe and free from harm.

God also wants worship. God wants closeness and intimacy with us.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29:11 ESV
