Our culture wants you to think that love is inherently good. When hearing this it might sound right. You might ask, how could love be bad or even sinful, right? It sounds warm and fuzzy, and love is a good thing. How can love be wrong? They pose the question; how can a loving God not accept my loving relationship? What is love though, and who said that love is always good?

Merriam-Webster (Taken January 2024)

Modern love can mean lot’s of different things.

You hear that God is love all of the time. Is this true? Above, both definitions of love include sex. Is God sex or sexual desire? Outside of a marriage between one man and one woman it is a sin to lust after or have sex with someone in any way or form.

but I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Matthew 5:28

The Merriam-Webster dictionary says, “attraction based on sexual desire”, “the sexual embrace: copulation”. Dictionary.com says love can be a sexual desire if it is mingled with affection. Affection has to do with emotions and feelings. So according to these definitions love is an emotion, desire, feeling or sexual act. Love can be a thing such as an emotion or it can be a type of action that one can express. It can also be a desire that we have. It can be a noun which is a person, place, thing or idea. It can also be a verb which represents an action or state of being.

Love can be sinful as we just discussed. Sex is ordained between a marriage between one man and one woman. All other sexual activities are a sin. However, they can be considered love according to these definitions. This is sinful love. Love can also be used for something you are attached to or devoted too. “I love pizza”, “I love hate”, “I love sin”, “I love murder”, “I love rape”, “I love cheating on my spouse.” etc. If you love something that the bible calls sin this is an evil, sinful and wicked love. If someone said that they loved murdering black people we would all condemn them and rightfully so however we can see that this love is evil. We should also be able to see or say how other types of love can be evil as well.

God is Agape

He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

1 John 4:8

And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

1 John 4:16

The word love in both of these scripture verses comes from the Greek word, agape.

26 agápē – properly, love which centers in moral preference.

Bible Hub (Taken February 2024) https://biblehub.com/greek/26.htm

When you read in the King James Bible that God is love, the word love is referring to a specific word that holds a moral preference to it. Agape is an active type of love. It is feeding the poor and homeless, helping restore homes for the widows, preaching to those in prison and volunteering your time and abilities to help others in a good and moral standing according to the word of God. This is what the Bible is saying. God is a specific type of love. God is not love in general or love according to our modern definitions or love according to how we understand and define love. God is agape.

Love & Hate

In many cases love & hate are neither sinful, evil, good, or righteous. They are just emotions, and it depends on what you do with it and what it’s about that will determine its moral stance. In some cases, love is a sin and in others love is an admiral thing. In other cases, hate is a good thing and in others hate is a sin. It just depends on what type and what you love or hate.

The Bible talks a lot about love and who or what we should love.

Love thy neighbor – Matthew 5:43

Love God – Matthew 22:37

Love Godly wisdom – Proverbs 8:17

Love your enemies – Luke 6:35

Love God and righteousness, hate sin – Luke 16:13

Love Jesus – John 14:15

Love one another – John 15:17

Husbands love your wife – Ephesians 5:25

Wives love your husbands – Titus 2:4

Love the brethren of Christ – 1 Peter 2:17

Who hate the good, and love the evil;

Micah 3:2

Micah is talking about Israel in the scripture verse above. He is saying that they hate good and love evil. The Bible warns us many times about people that hate the word and his righteousness. Our morality should not come from ourselves, the government, the schools or from anywhere else. It should come from God and God alone.

5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding.

6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he shall direct thy paths.

7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: Fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

8 It shall be health to thy navel, And marrow to thy bones.

Proverbs 3:5-8

Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

Amos 5:15

Love God, Hate sin

People scoff at this all of the time, and I personally think it is hilarious when they do because they do this exact same thing. We all do it. “Love the sinner, hate the sin.” You can easily translate this to, “Love your child but don’t let them do whatever they want.” If your child used a racial slur, would you not hate what they did? No normal person would hate their own child because of it. Instead, they would train them to respect others and not use those words. The world does the equivalency of this all of the time. Here is another good post about this topic from a different website that I am not affiliated with.

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

John 13:34-35

As Christians we are to love one another. We are also to love our neighbors and to love our enemies. If someone is going to hell as a result of their sin and not accepting Christ, the most loving thing you can do is to warn them and share with them the good news about Jesus so they can escape hell and go to heaven. The most hateful thing you could do is to pretend that that are not in danger for all of eternity when you know the truth.
